Why Getting Adjusted Regularly Is Crucial To Your Health

Doctors of Chiropractic focus on the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. We do this by assessing the human frame—the joints of your spine and extremities—and how their function affects your nervous system, muscular system and overall health of your body.

The nervous system is housed in the skull and spinal canal and exits the spine in 31 spinal nerves. These nerves then exit through your joints between each spinal vertebra. These nerves control every function in your body—how your muscles contract and relax, how much pain you feel, and your autonomic bodily functions (the ones you don’t have to think about like breathing and beating your heart) to name a few.

So it makes sense that a dysfunctional spine can cause a lot of problems.

Picture this: When the human frame is in balance, the nervous system communicates well to muscles, helping them to contractand relax when needed. Little to no energy is expended for good posture, and your joints are mobile and hydrated. When the human frame is under very little strain you will be in very little pain – words to live by!

Now, picture the opposite—when the human frame is unbalanced. Those nerve endings can’t get signals to your muscles and joints. In response, those areas become inflamed and painful. Ouch!

I Thought Doctors of Chiropractic Just Treated Back Pain?

In addition to helping a patient recover from injury or pain, my goal as a chiropractic doctor is to promote overall wellness by providing continued preventative care. Unfortunately, our modern healthcare system doesn’t promote the same philosophy. Wellness is a topic that is rarely discussed as medical establishments are set up to treat the sick verses promoting ways to avoid disease in the first place.

Chiropractic care beyond active treatment can help maintain the hard work your body went through to overcome pain as well as to promote overall health and wellness. This form of chiropractic care is called maintenance care.

A board certified Doctor of Chiropractic is trained to be able to recognize where your body’s structural imbalances are and make exact changes to the joints and muscles that are dysfunctional. We do that using muscle release and the chiropractic adjustment. A chiropractic adjustment is designed to put movement into the joints that are stuck and help all the joints of your spine move more efficiently and glide better on each other.

Does it hurt? NO! A Doctor of Chiropractic is trained to only adjust the joints of your spine that need it and also to use the exact right amount of force for each unique patient. As we adjust a patient’s spine, the strain and dyscomfort gently and slowly balances, leaving the patient feeling less pain, but often more energy as well!

What is Maintenance Care?

Maintenance care is on-going, wellness-based care after an active treatment plan. It’s a preventative approach to keep the body in alignment to support optimal function in the body.

Maintenance care also prevents small injuries or symptoms from becoming larger concerns because symptoms are detected earlier. This can save time, money, future pain, and prevent other issues from becoming more serious.

Think of it like this: it can take months of getting adjusted regularly to correct your body’s misalignment. Once you’ve put in all that work to feel better, why would you risk injury again? Getting adjusted regularly once your symptoms have been corrected is like insurance on your body. It ensures you are maintaining your health while preventing future injury or misalignment from taking place.

How Often Should I Get Adjusted?

Frequency of maintenance care visits will depend on your individual condition but typically one visit every four to six weeks is an effective amount of time.

Other Benefits of Regular Chiropractic Adjustments

When running at an optimal level, your nervous system is able to provide your organs and tissues with adequate nutrients and oxygen. If your body is out of alignment and there is a blockage within your nervous system, it can affect your immune system’s ability to fight off viruses or bad bacteria causing you to come sick more frequently.
